FEDERATION CLINIC NEWS OCTOBER 2011
Clinic News
Federation Clinic is committed to staying up to date with general practice care, and training our future doctors. Dr Phillip Steele attended the GPET (General Practice Education and Training) Conference in Canberra during September. The sessions at this conference assist the practice to better teach our registrar doctors, keep our region up to date with General Practice training, and hence help with patient care. Our doctors share knowledge gained at such workshops at a weekly meeting which is highly useful for Registrar Doctors and mentoring Doctors alike.
A reminder that the 21st October is Loud Shirt Day - which helps to raise awareness and funds for children with hearing impairment and deafness. So do join in and wear a loud item of clothing to support the cause!
Traveling? Are your vaccines up to date?
With Summer quickly approaching, many patients may be considering overseas travel.
Some countries have very different and sometimes serious infections that we are not exposed or immunised against in Australia. Hence it is recommended that you check with your doctor regarding any necessary pre-travel vaccinations. For example, if you were heading to south-east Asia, you may require Hep A and typhoid vaccination along with malaria prevention tablets and advice. Other things to discuss include eating safely whilst traveling, safe drinking water, sun protection, and measures to reduce risk of blood clots related to travel.
It is also a good opportunity to ensure that your routine vaccinations are up to date, including tetanus boosters. Whooping cough has also re-emerged, so patients are advised to discuss a booster with their Doctor or practice Nurse. Women considering pregnancy should ensure that they are immune to rubella – this can be done with a blood test.
We advise patients to take a letter with them detailing any medications they need to take during travel. Patients can make an appointment with their Doctor to assist.
