NURSING STUDENTS
Midwifery students from Wodonga Regional Health Service, as part of their training in antenatal care, join local Specialist and GP Obstetricians in their private consulting rooms to see patients. The GP Obstetricians at Federation Clinic are involved in this teaching program.
The students take part in routine antenatal checks, talking to the women about their experiences and problems and also obtaining valuable practice in clinical examination of the pregnant patient.
Many of the students will again meet up with the pregnant women in the Maternity Ward at the hospital, providing the additional comfort of a familiar face.
More continuous involvement of student midwives in the antenatal care of particular women is provided through a Charles Sturt University program. Student midwives follow women who would like to participate in this program through their pregnancy, attending many of their antenatal visits and then seeing them during the hospital and postnatal period. This gives the students a closer involvement in the pregnancy and a more personal role in each antenatal visit.
