REGISTRAR BASIC TERM

Federation Clinic has a team of five enthusiastic teachers who provide many hours of formal and informal teaching during the basic term.
The supervisors providing this teaching are:
Dr. Peter Francis, Dr. Phillip Steele, Dr. Geoff Williams, Dr.Sarah Veitch and Dr. Fiona Christie.

Formal teaching consists of three hours each week, rostered in advance, with rotation through each of the designated supervisors.
    Standard activities include:
  • Direct observation of the Registrar by the Supervisor
  • Direct observation of the Supervisor by the Registrar
  • Development of a Learning Plan
  • Topic discussion
  • Case presentation and discussion
  • Video recording of selected consultations for analysis
  • Medical record review
  • Formal feedback to both parties at Week 4, 12 and 24 including review of the Registrar's Learning Plan
  • Use of "Assessment Tools" provided by Bogong Regional Training Network
  • Practical demonstration and supervision of commonly performed general practice procedures.
Specific teaching in areas of special interest of the supervisors is available including:
  • Recognition and management of pigmented skin lesions
  • Infection control
  • Antenatal care
  • Women's health.
Additional teaching sessions are conducted by our nursing staff in their areas of expertise:
  • Diabetes Education
  • Immunisation
  • Asthma Management and Education

FRACGP clinical examination preparation incudes fortnightly tutorials with Federation Clinic doctors. Real patients, enthusiastic GPs and visiting specialists help to make these tutorials highly stimulating and successful in enhancing the clinical examination skills of our Registrars.

Other education opportunities are available at seminars, conferences and dinners held in the area for the local medical community - there are many opportunities to meet other doctors.

Visits to local specialists in their rooms can be arranged for further teaching in areas identified in the Registrar's Learning Plan.

The above in-practice teaching is in addition to that provided by the great medical educator group at Bogong Regional Training Network. Basic registrars spend 2 days out of the practice each month, taking part in formal teaching days conducted by Bogong where they have the opportunity to meet with other registrars and discuss common issues.

ADVANCED TERM

The program for Advanced Term registrars is similar to the Basic Term, with the exception that a minimum of 6 hours of teaching are provided in each 4 week period.
Formal feedback and review of Learning Plans takes place early in the term and again towards the end of the term.
